This is advertised above as a two-part course consisting of 24 thirty minute lectures on audio cassettes. The photograph of the product shows two boxes, one box containing of Part 1 and the other box containing Part 2. Each box containing 12 lectures. I was only sent Part 2 of the course. I purchased this as a used course from one of Amazon's 3rd party partners. Amazon described and depicted this product as a two-part course on their website but apparently allows their 3rd party partners to sell incomplete versions of a product. To me, this seems very misleading. I was unable to go back and determine whether or not the 3rd party supplier correctly described the product as incomplete on their website since it is no longer listed.(I bought the only one.) However, Amazon needs to explicitly state on their webpage describing the product that some of the used products from their partners may be incomplete and their (Amazon's) photographic depiction and description of the product may not accurately represent what their 3rd party suppliers are offering. Peoples and Cultures of the World The Great Courses Prof Edward Fischer 9781565859173 Books Reviews
Just another Leftist professor who believes that "all cultures are equal." I much prefer physical (or biological) anthropology over cultural anthropology, but I was hoping this series of lectures would be full of facts and statistics about the many cultures of the world--but no such luck. The professor focuses on the most primitive groups--and then he has the nerve to critique the West using Marxian analysis. Nowhere does the professor consider that IQ has a bearing a bearing on how advanced or primitive a society is. Not recommended.
For anyone interested in culture and pedagogy, this set of lectures is worth your undivided attention. The professor has a firm grasp of the data and presents elements of many mainstream interpretations of the same. He does so with a somewhat agnostic attitude geared toward critical assessment of them. This is a good introduction to the field, with many esoteric facts to stimulate discussion. He uses the contrast between cultures to support a cautious attitude toward the assessment/treatment of the field and of cultures.
To an extent, this caution can actually become a bit burdensome, as it becomes unclear precisely *what* the professor believes. I find a clear, unapologetic bias is helpful for me when learning - otherwise, you have to "unpack" the presentation and their bias yourself.
Fischer is at least willing to bring us much of that controversy without dwelling on any of them. In that sense he is great at introducing ideas; just don't assume that his best assessment is comprehensive.
This course serves as an excellent vehicle to explore the diversity of world cultures (both past and present), including the sometimes surprisingly extreme ways in which they differ. Some of the examples provided by Fisher are so intriguing that they've stuck in my memory for years.
Fisher is a well organized and clear lecturer, and he comes across as quite personable -- as someone you enjoy spending time with (his slight southern twang only adds to his charm!).
In short, I can't think of anything negative to say about the course, and I highly recommend it to everyone, especially considering the increasingly globalized world we live in, and thus the need to understand other cultures, or at least appreciate that other cultures can be very different from ours without necessarily being "crazy."
