3 stars though this does not really reflect my enjoyment (or lack thereof), but rather an appreciation for the series as a whole and the ambition of the world and the concept.I did not enjoy HEART OF THE ASSASSINS. It felt like everything I loved in ACADEMY OF ASSASSINS was the opposite in this book - right down to the epilogue Bonus Material. What was so wonderful in ACADEMY and made for such a satisfying and sweet ending, leaving me on a high was exactly the opposite in HEART. Here the Bonus Material was dark, tainted, frustrating, and a little depressing, turning it into more of a cliffhanger than a satisfying conclusion. Even the nicer moments were, at best, bittersweet.
When I first realized the unexpected complexity the author had incorporated into her world-building, I was excited. How cool was it to link everything to the Greek gods? That the Primordial World was Mount Olympus? That Tartarus existed and had become the gods' prison? Awesome!
Unfortunately, the explanations for all this backstory were convoluted and confusing. The twisted NOT logic (illogic more properly - except it made me rant so hard that I will continue to call it NOT logic) only seemed to exist to force the plot into more and more bizarre and unlikely directions. The story quickly became almost farcical in its contrivances - a satire of a Greek classic like this Iliad or the Odyssey. Hell, even had shades of Percy Jackson.
So, while the first book was wonderful - the second book was... not. Well, not to me. I am quite sure many people will disagree. Maybe even I will disagree when I eventually re-read this series as CLAIMED BY THE ASSASSINS is released. If it had been another series, another author... had I had different expectations then maybe I would have enjoyed this more.
Perhaps I struggled so much because I am truly engaged in the story and like these characters - enough that watching the stupid decisions being made over and over felt like it didn't do the potential of ACADEMY justice.
I became so unbelievably tired of how completely relationship inept every single one of the main characters was, and of how idiotic the "logic" behind those decisions was - all so the series remained slow burn. Surely there are better, and less frustrating, ways to build relationships slowly? Or perhaps even allow some relationships to actually progress, while others still take time to develop? But having ALL FIVE of the men being ridiculously stupid about how they interact with Morgan... GAH!
I will continue to read the series, because it continues to have great potential, and I love the characters themselves. I love all the unusual paranormal creatures Stacey Brutger has folded into her world - her worlds - from night mares to nagas to leshys. I love the variety within the main relationships themselves - in abilities, in heritage, in forms, in personalities. I love the unfolding mystery of Morgan's heritage. I am curious to know what will come at them all next.
Just please let it not be as frustrating as this was? Pretty please?

Heart of the Assassins An Academy of Assassins Novel Book 2 eBook Stacey Brutger Reviews
First off you definitely need to have read the first book in this series, I love the fact it takes off right where we left Morgan and her guys. I love that everyone gets time in this book so it fleshes out all the characters. To me a great book has a great story BUT also great people that make you feel and care what happens to them.
This book is all that! Now im sad I read it so fast and its over and ill have to wait for the 3rd one.
This was a good read. I didn't love it as much as I loved the 1st one but it was still really good. I felt myself getting confused with the story at times and having to reread. I would really like the author to focus on the relationships and show more bonding because right now I'm not feeling the link between them. I also feel as though Ascher and Morgan should have a closer bond then the rest of the boys because of how long they where fighting monster together. In this book it's like their relationship was none existent. That's just my opinion though. I love all the guys and RH books are new to me. I think it's very important for the author to have more of the appearance of the guys being detailed when the MC is with that specific guy. Idk if it was just me but I kept trying to think of how the guys should look and couldn't.
This book was an action-packed read from start to finish. I was riveted from the very start and couldn’t put the book down until I was finished.
In this book we see Morgan and the guys on a quest for a cure to rid the Primordial realm of the plague that has been unleashed on this realm. Throughout this journey Morgan and the guys stumbled upon several challenges. Some challenges came in the form of several vicious adversities and others in the form of possible allies. Above all, it was great to see Morgan and the guys continuously rise above these trials while strengthening their bonds in the process.
I really enjoyed this world that Brutger created; it’s very unique and refreshing to read about the different species and plot twists that she has so marvelously written. Beyond everything, I’m very taken with the multidimensional characters that she has created that somehow seem to weave their way into your heart. Every single one of the guys are amazing, but I’m especially taken with Ryder. His hard and muscular exterior combined with his gentle spirit just melt my heart something fierce.
Overall, an enthralling, action-packed and angsty read. There’s so much that transpired in this book that I’m eagerly awaiting the arrival of the next book in the ‘Academy of Assassins’ series to see where this story will lead to. Above all, I’m most looking forward to learning more about Morgan’s past and the new additions to the group.
Such a great follow up to book 1. Morgan is important and the team is so focused on keeping her safe that they forget she needs them to be her friends and family. When she finally starts to open up to them, the school falls under attack and suddenly she finds herself in the Primordial realm which is dying from the fog.
The journey to save the realm and their lives is frought with danger, but it pulls the team closer than ever. As they are separated and rejoined time and time again, they prove to each other their love and devotion.
There is more to Morgan's bloodline than royalty and the news is spreading. I can't wait for book 3. Also, I can't wait for Morgan to kick Draven's butt over the secret and then show him why he should have told her to begin with.
3 stars though this does not really reflect my enjoyment (or lack thereof), but rather an appreciation for the series as a whole and the ambition of the world and the concept.
