Agents of Light and Darkness Nightside Book 2 Simon R Green Books
Simon R Green is one of my favorite authors, and this is probably my favorite of all his books. I really enjoy the noir aspect of it, the unusual setting, and the characters. The one thing that I can see people not enjoying is that (I feel) Mr. Green writes because he enjoys it. That comes through in how lovable his characters are, but also in the little things that are sometimes overlooked. For example, names are frequently reused, and occasionally a character or group of characters will change completely from book to book. I overlook these minor things because I feel like I can really immerse myself in the world in spite of them.Tags : Amazon.com: Agents of Light and Darkness (Nightside, Book 2) (9780441011131): Simon R. Agents of Light and Darkness Nightside Book 2 Simon R Green Books Reviews
So this book had a biblical plot, but it works with the Nightside feeling of how anything can happen there... (IEJude, angels, and references from the bible itself.) We get more background on the characters, which is cool and helpful - gives them more depth. It was a good book.
I love Simon R. Green's style. I love how over the top goofy it can get sometimes, while still having some pretty dark as hell moments. I love how the Nightside comes off as equal parts nighmarish otherworld and every Saturday Morning Cartoon you ever saw combined.
The trick to enjoying these books is to not take it too seriously. Its campy as camp can be and, like an old episode of Power Rangers, thats half the damn charm of it for me.
This is the second book in the Nightside series by Simon Green. This was a great book; much in par with the first book.
John Taylor is good at finding things; anything. When he is contacted by the Vatican to find the Unholy Grail, the most vile and evil of artifacts, he knows he is in trouble. The Unholy Grail is somewhere in the Nightside and everyone who is anyone is trying to get their hands on it. With the assistance of Shotgun Suzie, John starts the long dangerous quest to find the Unholy grail. Meanwhile the angels of heaven and hell want the Unholy Grail for themselves and will stop at nothing to get it.
This is another fast-paced, fun novel. Written in a very noir style, with great action scenes, and grisly details it's a quick (and sometimes slightly disturbing) read. It was great to get more background on Shotgun Suzie. It was also fun to meet some of the other interesting characters in the Nightside. You learn more about the Collector and get to meet Nasty Jack Starshine, along with a slew of other badies. I really enjoyed this book. My only complaint is that, again, it is such a short book.
The story is fairly self-contained with an over-arcing story that deals with the mystery behind John's mother and the mystery of why the Nightside itself exists. I look forward to reading the next book. These are well-written, easy to read, fun to read novels. They are very creative in their own way.

This book had a great premise - the Unholy Grail (the one Judas drank from at the Last Supper) is in the Nightside, and all the usual power players are seeking it, as well as the Vatican and angels from heaven & hell, all of whom converge on the Nightside. The novel, however, fell flat.
I didn't feel the seconday characters were develped at all. Jude, the mysterious Vatican rep. who hires John is very one-dimensional, as were Merlin, the Collector, and Walker. Then there's Suzie Shooter - although she's given a tragic backstory, she still doesn't feel "real," and I don't really care about her. Since in this book she takes more of a lead role, that's problematic. I don't think she and John have any chemistry as partners, so hope she doesn't become a regular in that regard. The angels were more or less a menacing background presence.
On a positive note, the detective-noir langauge was toned down, John is still likeable, and if you can get through the first half, the pace picks up significantly.
I picked this series up b/c I'm in between books right now, so I'll give the third book a chance, but if it doesn't improve, I think I'll be moving on from John Taylor & the Nightside.
The Nightside a place extant without influence from Above or Below. If you want it, you can find it in the Nightside... if it doesn't find you first.
The Nightside is this world's melting pot for EVERYthing mystical, magical, maniacal, holy, hellish, or downright bizare. It is a secret part of London, always 3AM, and technology is often seen side by side with elements of the Arcane.
John Taylor, Private Eye, is the hero of every story in the Nightside. He is supposed to be a King in Waiting, but no one's ever brought him proof (or money) from his royalty. He has a gift, a psychic gift, for "Finding Things". These could be anything from lost objects to how bullets can get from his enemies guns to his open hands without crossing the intervening space....
In this episode, John is hired by none other than Judas the Betrayer to find the Unholy Grail -- the object that caught HIS blood after he betrayed Christ and hung himself -- and was brought back and forgiven by Christ. Judas hires John to find it, because it has landed in The Nightside, and it should be destroyed. Its presence in the Nightside calls the terrible servants of Above and Below to the nightside, and a war is started.
You won't put this book down....
