I just finished Deadly Intent and all I really need to say is welcome back to Romantic Suspense, Pamela Clare ! Of course, there’s more that needs to be said, including go read this book. I really missed her investigative journalists digging into scandalous news stories and getting drawn into webs of danger (and meeting their destined mate along the way.)Fans spent books 1-7 of her I-Team series of romantic suspense watching Joaquin Ramirez go through an incredible journey as a photojournalist on the I-Team, helping the reporters break their new stories. We’ve seen him change from kind of a team brother to a man determined to step up and take action when needed and be every bit the alpha hero as the rest of the hunks each of the I-Team heroines lassoed. Joaquin was always in the background – earning a Pulitzer along the way for a photo taken at the end of Breaking Point.
Let me tell you, Joaquin is every bit as hot of a hunk as the rest of Clare’s men. (Who KNEW Joaquin could salsa – man-oh-man. ) But he’s also kind and caring and because he sees the world through the lens of his camera, he sees things others miss. When he sees Mia for the first time - wow.
Mia Starr is a retired US Army Captain who is dealing with her own daemons following her tours in the Middle East. She now works for the local botanical gardens. Someone is killing the men she served with who were involved in some secret, scandalous activity. She trusts nobody. But Joaquin wins her over and they have to find a killer together.
Along the way we get caught up on the rest of the I-Team crowd, many of who are dealing with the fallout from Dead By Midnight, book seven. Julian Darcangelo and Marc Hunter are there. So are the Wests and Holly Andris.
Pamela Clare’s characters drawn you in. I liked Mia. She was heartbreakingly vulnerable, and insecure over this sexy, caring photojournalist who keeps crossing her path. Joaquin is wonderful, as are all Clare’s heroes. There is just enough spice as these two fall in love. You don’t have to have read all the previous stories, but it’s helpful if you’ve read Dead by Midnight. (Trust me, though, you’ll want to read books 1-7).
So welcome back, Pamela! 5 big stars.

Deadly Intent ITeam Book 8 edition by Pamela Clare Romance eBooks Reviews
I wasn’t sure how Joaquin would fit the role of leading hero when he’s always been the supportive backbone for others. Joaquin isn’t the badass like Darcangelo or Hunter, nor is he the outdoorsy, thrill-seeking type like Gabe; instead our salsa dancing hero is the artist, capturing the passion and heartache of human nature with a click of a button. Have no fear, because he fit the role of protective hero to a T! I could drag a list out, but I’ll just say my favorite was his open honesty with Mia, even when it landed him in hot water at work. It’s just so unusual for a character to simply lay it all out there from the start, but it avoided needless drama and allowed more focus on the developing relationship-win/win as far as I’m concerned!
Mia was a good fit for Joaquin. She had brains, a good eye for detail, and was a little bad ass herself. She also fit into the I-Team group like a long lost friend and I got a kick out of who ended up basically being her bestie! The suspense wasn’t as intense as previous stories, but it worked out because the level suited Mia and Joaquin’s capabilities. Besides, the hard stuff definitely called for appearances by Darcangelo and Hunter;)
As to the romance, I liked the development even if it happened quickly. It was also sexier than I expected, but still fell in the realm of sweet. For example, when I think of Zach or Darcangelo’s stories, they bring raw sexuality to mind..or maybe that’s because of the adrenaline rush, lol.. Joaquin reminded me of Reese. They both have the kind of subdued sexiness that tends to catch people by surprise when something happens, and Joaquin... he caught me by surprise.
The I-Team series has been a longtime favorite and when I saw Joaquin’s name in the blurb, I clicked it without finishing the summary. I had no clue what the story was about and discovered I didn’t care! I simply knew Joaquin would finally get his story and I would catch glimpses of favorite characters. Overall, I was happy with the end result and will keep my figures crossed for future stories, long or short!
