Spirits That Walk in Shadow Nina Kiriki Hoffman Books
Spirits That Walk in Shadow isn't quite as good as the Silent Strength of Stones or the Thread that Binds the Bones but since those two are some of my favorite books of ALL TIMES that's not faint praise. I just wish Nina Hoffman would write more books.I think what I like most about Hoffman's books is that she veers off in the most unexpected directions. Her books are about family and mystery and powers. Her books leave so many mysteries - and that's a good thing in this age of over explanations and baseness. Her families are families - complex, and interwoven, loving, hating, cruel and compassionate. So much happens in the interstices of ordinary life. Spirits That Walk in Shadow is about two freshmen roommates in their first year in college. It's also about protection and friendship. Monsters in the shadows. Learning boundaries. How to help a friend in trouble. Families. Talent. Finding your own way. Beauty and terror in unexpected places. Belief and trust. I could go on gushing for a while. It's a lovely book. This is my third(?) copy.

Spirits That Walk in Shadow Nina Kiriki Hoffman Books Reviews
This was rather juvenile but fine.
A sequel to THE THREAD THAT BINDS THE BONES, this book is long overdue but well worth the wait.
Jaimie Locke is a marvelous character that brings the magic into this magical tale, while the other point of view character is her room-mate Kim, who brings the drama. Like the first reviewer commented, the book's only flaw is that it ended all too soon.
If you like contemporary tales of magic, this book is for you.
If you like well-developed characters and plots, this book is for you.
Heck, if you can read, this book is for you.
I, for one, cannot wait for Nina's next Chapel Hollow story. They're always a treat.
Nina Kiriki Hoffman is back to what she does best in 'spirits that walk in shadow".She beguiles us with her simplicity and enchantes us with her world that is only a step away from where we are now. The magic is the glue but the characters draw us in.Kim who starts out without the magical spark and Jaimie, whom we have met in a past Hoffman book ,who is trying to control the magic she has.Starting University and sharing a room together the girls havr to face lossing all magic and being helped by a family snake.Well presented and easy to read this book fits in well with Hofman's other work.
I loved this book!! I've heard of " energy vampires " - a term used when talking about people who unknowingly
" take" other peoples energy! This a great story about an "emotion vamp"! I love Rugee!
Very creative story! Well written and loved the " attitude of Jaime"!
The two roomates are definitely a great example
Of how opposites do attract and how friendship can heal even the deepest scars!!!
Great story! But I love the Chapel House people, and their Benefactors.
I love Hoffman's style - so light and tensile and her imagery is also full of light and colour - and her magic-users are thankfully most un-run-of-the-mill. I do wish she wasn't going so much into YA. I wd. like to see some more adult books from her.My favourite of her novels remains *The Thread that Binds the Bones.*
*Spirits* had all the strengths of the other Hoffman books, but also, again, it's a YA and coming of age story and for me that's getting a bit old.
One of my favourite books of all time. I adore Nina Kiriki Hoffman and love her complex characters, heroes and villains both. So hoping Thread that Binds the Bones and The Silent Strength of Stones get converted for kindle. This is probably the best of her kindle books along with Fistful of Sky. Both books made me tear up in parts, without feeling cheaply manipulated. Which happens to me very rarely.
