Heart of the Dragon Atlantis Book 1 Gena Showalter 9780373770571 Books

The idea of Atlantis was very cool, but we never really got to learn much about it. Other than visiting a couple of palaces, a pub, and a quick run through the forest; we discover almost nothing about this world. There was a passage near the beginning of the story where Darius is staring out the window of his palace, and the city of Atlantis is described like this "Crowds of Sirens, centaurs, cyclops, griffins, and female dragons ventured from shops and strolled the streets as merchants peddled their wares. Several female nymphs frolicked in a nearby waterfall. How happy they appeared, how carefree." Sounds like a great place, but we the readers never get to experience any of it. That is the first and last time that any of those creatures are ever mentioned or appear in the story. We do get introduced to a few vampires along the way, but we don't learn much about them either. The story itself is slow, predictable, and just plain boring. I also found it quite comical that Darius has powers and spells that will allow him to do just about anything. Need to heal a wound...dragon saliva works on that. Need to travel a long distance, boom...a time travel spell. Need to know what's happening to other characters in the story...a medallion that works as a crystal ball will help you out....and so on, and so on. It all got very tedious.

Heart of the Dragon Atlantis Book 1 Gena Showalter 9780373770571 Books Reviews

Darius is a dragon shifter from Atlantis who is the guardian of a portal to the human world. Whenever a human accidentally stumbles upon the portal he is to immediately kill them. Humans have been know to enter Atlantis and kill all in their path.
Imagine his surprise when Grace a human woman looking for her brother in the as stumbles through.
What to do? Follow his duty to kill her or succumb to the desire flowing through his veins.
This is a great start in the Atlantis series. I highly recommend it.
I have enjoyed "Heart of the Dragon" in paperback years ago and now on . Gena Showalter brings common mythos to life in her stories. This is the first in her "Atlantis" series. She marries the story of Atlantis with the Greek mythology nicely. I just wish there were stories about some of the other dragons like Tagart and Brand. It would be nice to see Renard have a story too.
This hunger he awakened inside her...it was too intense to be real, but too real to be denied.-Grace's thoughts.

No man should be without hope. -Grace's thoughts.

"Fire flew out of your mouth." Grace gaped. "Fire really and truly flew out of your mouth."
"Yes."
"But fire flew out of your mouth."
"I did tell you I was a dragon."
"I just didn't expect fire to fly out of your freaking mouth."-Grace and Darius.

"I've seen enough movies and read enough books to know that sometimes the safest course of action is to retreat."
"And sometimes the safest course of action is the wrong one."-Grace and Darius.

Excercise...how she was coming to loathe the word. It was a thing more foul than low-fat ranch dressing.-Grace's thoughts.

"I'm so ready to nail the Argonauts to the wall," she muttered to Darius.
A genuine smile played at the corner of his lips. "I had not realized before what a bloodthirsty wench you are. Try to contain your bloodlust long enough that we might question this Mitch."
"Bloodlust?" she gasped, then realized he thought she literally meant to nail Mitch to the wall. "I meant-oh, never mind." Whether she meant it or not, the idea had merit. "I'll try to contain myself."-Grace and Darius.

"You lead the way, baby. I'll follow you anywhere. "-Alex to Teira.

She was a treasure more rich and satisfying than any other. He would protect her with his life.-Darius' thoughts about Grace.

"What are you willing to do for me to save your woman?"
"Call off your bloodsuckers, and I will not burn down your home."-Layel and Darius.

"What's your naughtiest fantasy?" she murmured against his collarbone. She bit down, not hard enough to break the skin, but hard enough to leave her mark. "Perhaps I can make it come true."
"You are my fantasy, Grace." His hands cupped her jaw, and he forced her to look up at him. "Only you."-Grace and Darius.

"You are more important to me than air," he said. "More important than water. You, Grace, are my only necessity."-Darius to Grace.
Eh.. this was an okay read for me. I was definitely disappointed though. I thought the story would take place in Atlantis and although in the beginning, when Grace the heroine falls into the portal of Atlantis, it does. It quickly moves to New York City where the hero of the story Darius meets this new world and they trapeze through out New York City trying to figure out want the dilemma is thats happening in Atlantis.
When I purchased this book I thought it would be one of those sci-fi romances where there are a lot of "action scenes" if ya know what I mean, but nothing really happened as far as the romantic scenes until about 80% in the book! When I decided to purchase the book I had read some of the reviews and felt that they were all talking about how the story line wasnt that great but the romantic scenes were "Hawt". I was almost fed up with the book at around 70%, but felt since I was this much through I might as well finish it.
I read the reviews and felt most of them portrayed a book that wasn't all that great, but I was in the mood for a dragon shape shifting story with some good romance and thought I would give it a try (hey, it's happened before when the cover looked really unappealing or the average score wasn't that high and it turned out that I really enjoyed the story like Abbey's Abduction) but unfortunately this book did not apply.
Also I don't think I will be reading the 2nd book in the series and I'm a little hesitant to read and other books from the this author.
