I waited a long time for this book to come out and it did not disappoint. To all of you potential buyers, please buy The Whistling Woman first. Moonfixer is a sequel and you will enjoy the characters so much more. To the two women that author this book I would like to say thank you for letting us know your wonderful ancestors. I know the research into these peoples lives must have been a lot of fun. I have enjoyed both books and only hope that sometime in the future we get to travel with Bessie and Flectcher with the rest of their lives. Also I sincerely appreciated the personal email from Ms.Tillery to let me know Moonfixer had finally arrived. That meant a lot to me that she took that much time out of her busy schedule to pen the answer herself. These women are very gifted writers. I would recommend both books highly.Tags : Moonfixer (Appalachian Journey Book 2) - Kindle edition by CC Tillery, Caitlyn Hunter, Christy Tillery French. Moonfixer Appalachian Journey Book 2 edition by CC Tillery Caitlyn Hunter Christy Tillery French Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Book 2 of C C Tillery' s Appalachian Journey another wonderful work of fiction based on stories of their ancestry. After reading this book, I realized how much I miss listening to the stories my own dad used to tell of his youth. These two women have a wonderful gift of penmanship. While reading this series you will be transmitted to another time and place.
Second book in the Appalachian Journey Series (after A Whistling Woman). Another well-written book, again based on the diaries and stories of the authors' ancestress. I liked that she married the man she loved and became the teacher she wanted to be and was so well-suited to be. As in the earlier book, the character development was excellent, the grammar (except where misused deliberately) and punctuation were correct. The dialect was correct for the time. The stories told by and about different characters were often laugh-out-loud funny. As a former student in a one-room school and now a retired teacher, I really enjoyed reading her classroom experiences. Perhaps this made the book more relevant to me, but I recommend it, and am eager to see what life holds for Bessie next.
Can't wait to read the next book in the series. I LOVE LOVE LOVE everything about the books! The characters, setting, stories told-just everything. I love this series of books more than any that I have read a long long time.
I love the story line here but the only thing that I didnt enjoy, although sometimes interesting, was the description into the indian beliefs. Descriptions were very lengthy and got a bit bored with that. However, I will continue with the series. Have to see what happens next
I really enjoyed the first of this Whistling Woman series but this book resorted to less, good "novel" and more and drier, relating of old, mountain stories. The tale of the girl who went to Stone Mountain to be a young wife and teacher is very interesting. Her spunk and spirit continues on, from the first book. We also learn more about her Cherokee great-grandmother, as well as, what happens to her fracturing family, back on Hot Springs and afar.
I did also enjoy the author's descriptions of life in Southern Appalachia the homes, the seasonal trials and joys; the one room schooling; the taciturn and tough neighbors; the life with a strong but silent man; and the way one learns to cope and love one's new life. The narrator's ministrations of herbal medicine and plain old, home remedies and first aid, made her a trusted newcomer on the mountain. The insights into the hardships of the community and their antiquated ways are the solid stuff of American history that makes this continuing story interesting and informative.
If you like American historical novels, this series, especially the first book, a fun and interesting, extended tale. Again, I felt that the sisters that wrote this family story did "cheat" a bit, by including too many, rather misplaced tales of the Cherokee ways of the region. I would have liked more "novel" and less retelling of less-related folktales.
This was my favorite of the 3 Appalachian journey books. It reflected Appalachian life of this time period so clearly and its characters and their
interactions were fascinating to me. I did not care very much for the first book but the authors e-mailed me and urged me to follow through by reading their second book. I am so glad that I did. It brought back memories of sitting by elderly residents in this geographical area and listening to their life stories, some of which I actually witnessed. It brought Appalachian history to life and the love of simple, but at many times still complicated living. Strongly recommended for readers interested in Appalachia. ,
If there's more about these interesting, peaceful people, I want to read about them. Bessie is such a strong wonderful woman. Altho I do like thriller type books, these stories from Appalachia are so calming to me. I would think that the grade schools would offer this story-book for the benefit of a calmer and more peaceful time in America.
Bessie has a love for humanity, her ability to see the good in others, and her kindness,do not prepare her for the coming tragedy.
The story about the little family of African Americans who came to the farm one day, is such an example of how people, of all colors, can be friends.
Bessie has American Indian blood.
She has often heard the sounds of the shackles of human slaves coming from the fields. Other people don't hear what Bessie hears . So she has a new friend, her husband has a helper, Bessie has 2 little girls to teach. Eventually Bessies husband gives 2 acres of land to the family. All seems fine until the wretched evildoers come & torture and kill. Racists everywhere are evil everywhere.
