Bogeyman Steve Jackson 9780990557302 Books

This is one of the best written books on true crime that I have read. Not only is the story fascinatingly disturbing, but, Steve Jackson has a writing style that kept me "in" the story. He included facts about the cases, yet, not to the point of me wanting to speed-read through those parts. Steve Jackson is now on my list of great True Crime authors; and, I hope he writes more in this genre. I will read them all.

Bogeyman Steve Jackson 9780990557302 Books Reviews

This is the first book written by Steve Jackson that I’ve read and I was quite impressed. I think the reader must first understand what this book is about, before judgments should be made. The book does not exploit these innocent children by providing graphic details of the horror they were subjected to, nor does it spend any more time than necessary focusing on the worthless, hateful monster that committed those horrors. Instead, it offers a unique perspective of these cases by allowing the reader to understand the dedication and persistence it took these detectives, particularly Detective Gary Sweet, to solve these unimaginable crimes. As well as the personal toll it took on them and their families. In a time when we are consistently being made aware of the “bad apples” in policing, it was nice to be reminded that there are even more “good guys” working tirelessly and, sometimes, thanklessly to find justice, no matter the cost. I applaud Mr. Jackson for identifying the need for this book to be written and doing so in such an insightful manner. I have incredible respect for the detectives involved in these cases and hope that they are proud of their accomplishment, in spite of some of the negative reviews I’ve seen written here. Without these detectives, these beautiful children may not have received the justice they deserved to allow them to rest in peace. I’d also like to believe that the people tormented by these cases, both still living and not, such as the victims’ family members, witnesses, near victims, and Mr. Holleman have somehow managed to find a little peace, too.
Once I started this book I found I couldn't put it down...

Warning not for the faint of heart or any one with a weak stomach!

Extremely well written. This author was able to tell you all the important facts so they are understood, there were so many, while drawing you into the story.

If I'd read this book when my children were still small... I'd have hid them away in a closet till they turned 21.

What makes this book so hard to fathom is that you know this really happened... But ... Well, how can a person do these things?

And how sooo many lives this one person effected with his horrifying deeds.

I appreciate the fact that the author also elaborated on what happened to all the people involved in this case... It helped put closure for me, instead of not knowing and guessing.

I highly recommend this book, however bring a strong stomach and secure your children first for peace of mind!
I "enjoy" true crime stories but find the graphic details of victims' deaths too disturbing. This account of the investigation of a series of child abductions was troubling, of course, but primarily offered great insight into the detectives who work these cases. Steve Jackson is an excellent writer who was able to seamlessly tell a story and incorporate a multitude of characters, timelines, and details at the same time. Gary Sweet and his associates are to be commended for their determination and hard work. At the same time, the unnamed law enforcement officials from other jurisdictions who declined to use available info and witnesses to pursue their own missing child cases should be ashamed. I'm planning to write a few letters! And finally, credit must go to the jailhouse informants (however despicable their own crimes might be) who volunteered info that was needed to solve these crimes.
Bogeyman is an excellent book. I could not put it down. It is the story of the journey to convict and put away child serial killer David Eliot Penham. Penham is indeed the bogeyman that parents were and are afraid of. Steve Jackson made the characters come alive. I could easily picture them, and sympathize with those who worked so hard to get justice for all of the victims of Penham, even those not identified yet.

I highly recommend this book. Steve Jackson is a great author.
This book tore me up. And I'm not that easy to tear up. Yet...tore up in a good way. Let me explain...The dedication demonstrated by the police departments to take down this serial rapist of little girls (a real life bogeyman) was incredibly moving to read about. I guess I never really though hard enough about the impact investigating these types of violent crimes would have on our officers and their families. Its profoundly brought to light in this book and I believe I'm forever changed in how I will view those men and women who tirelessly work to protect us regular folk.

The serial rapist, David Penton, is a monster. And so heinous were his deeds, I believe if not for the superb talent of this author to expertly pen this story the kindest way he could, I'm not sure I could have continued. This crime is appalling, as is the case whenever children are hurt, so it may not be for the faint of heart. Just wanted to give you a heads-up. That said, I'm rating it at 5 stars and I'd give more if I could. Its superbly written, so compelling it kept me up all night reading, and simply a very powerful lesson can be learned from it.

So impassioned was the writing, I may or may not have cried a few tears at this part when the detective who cracked the case finally has his moment with Penton... "Sweet stopped him by holding up his hand. "You misunderstand," he said, his tone matter-of-fact. "We didn't come here to talk to you about whether or not you did it; we know you did it. We just wanted to meet you before we bring you back to Texas and kill you." All the feelings I experienced at that one moment were overwhelming - pride, relief, appreciation, and much much more. I highly recommend this book to any true crime fan.
This is one of the best written books on true crime that I have read. Not only is the story fascinatingly disturbing, but, Steve Jackson has a writing style that kept me "in" the story.
